Apache Kafka and the need for Kafka Security


Apache Kafka essentially serves as an internal intermediate layer, allowing our back-end systems to exchange real-time data streams via Kafka topics. With a conventional Kafka configuration, every user or application may typically publish messages about any topic and consume data from any topic. However, when our organization implements a shared tenancy model and several teams and apps use the same Kafka Cluster, as well as when the Kafka Cluster begins to onboard certain crucial and secret information, Kafka security must be implemented.

 

Problems Kafka Security Is Solving


There are three components of Kafka Security:


1. Encryption of Data In-Flight Using SSL/TLS

Between our producers and Kafka as well as between our consumers and Kafka, it keeps data encrypted. We can, however, claim that it is a highly fundamental pattern that everyone follows when using the website.


2. Authentication Using SSL or SASL

SSL and SASL enable our producers and consumers to validate their identity in our Kafka Cluster. It is a highly safe technique to give our clients the ability to validate an identity. That makes possible authorization.


3. Authorization Using ACLs

The Kafka brokers may check clients against access control lists to determine if a certain client would be permitted to write to or read from a specific topic.

 

Encryption (SSL)


This eliminates the issue of the man in the middle (MITM) attack because our packets transit to networks and bounce across machines as they are directed to the Kafka cluster. If our data is PLAINTEXT, any of these routers might read its contents.

With encryption turned on and correctly configured SSL certificates, our data is transported across the network in an encrypted and safe manner. The only two machines having the capacity to decrypt an SSL-encrypted packet are the first and last ones.

 

Kafka Authentication (SSL and SASL)


There are two ways to authenticate Kafka clients with our brokers: SSL and SASL.

 

SSL Authentication makes use of an SSL feature known as two-way authentication. In general, it provides our clients with a certificate that is signed by a certificate authority and enables our Kafka brokers to validate the clients' identities.

 

Simple Authorization Service Layer is referred to as SASL. The fundamental idea is that the Kafka protocol and authentication method are independent of each other. Both the Hadoop setup and big data systems use it a lot.

 

Kafka Authorization (ACL)


As soon as our Kafka clients are verified, Kafka has to be able to decide what they are allowed to do and what they are not. This is where authorization, which is controlled by access control lists, comes into play (ACL).

ACL is incredibly beneficial since they can help us in preventing disasters. As an example, consider a topic that can only be written about from a certain group of clients or hosts. Additionally, since we don't want the normal user to write anything to these subjects, any data corruption or deserialization issues are avoided. ACLs are also fantastic if we need to demonstrate to authorities that only specific programes/people have access to sensitive data.
