The magic mirror on the wall from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has finally become a reality with the introduction of Novera, a “smart mirror”. Well, almost, to say the very least. This mirror can not just talk, but flirt too. And, it is artificial intelligence (AI) which has made it possible.

Novera, a mirror developed by a Japanese company by the same name, talks to women and provides them companionship bordering on romance. It has a male ‘anime’ voice that will converse and compliment the woman looking into the mirror. This “smart mirror” now marks the entry of AI in the world of vanity.

The device comprises of a monitor display, a camera and a speaker. As soon as the user looks into the mirror, it scans their face and judges their expressions and reads their emotions, too.

Moreover, to keep things interesting, with a change in the user’s emotions, the mirror alters it’s way of interaction as well.

Novera talks to the user in the voices of three unseen anime characters currently, although only one of them has been revealed till now. Apart from this, the mirror is capable of understanding and responding to user’s questions making sound conversation, at the same time displaying a speech bubble showing the mirror’s dialogue.

While there have been other augmented reality mirrors in the market for a couple of years, which recommend cosmetic solutions to the users, Novera is the only “smart mirror” that allows an interactive user experience as well. A video was posted online introducing the product to the world, leaving social media amazed with this unusual creation. The biggest catch being the mirror’s ability to actively assess human emotions. In the video, a woman can be seen frowning to which the mirror senses sadness and asks her to smile instead and further goes on to encourage the user as soon as she smiles.

From exchanging early morning greetings with the user to examining their face to evaluate their appearance to assess their moods, Novera does it all. Novera incorporates the features of old smart mirrors to recommend makeup styles by altering the video of the user digitally. Additionally, it procures information from various facets like psychology, health, lifestyle, make-up, and others to hold engaging conversations with the users, making sure that someone is always interested to talk and that too, friendly words of praise.

Only a prototype of this mirror is said to be available and currently appears to be a large-sized object bearing resemblance to a typical make-up mirror, though there are smaller handheld compact versions in the works as well.
