How To Set Up VPN On Demand Feature On Your iPhone

On-demand VPN

VPN as we know, is a process of adding an extra layer of security to the private networks. We often use VPN apps to help secure the sensitive information and data stored in our smartphones. Every time you connect to the internet, you have to turn ‘on’ your VPN to make sure it’s working but sometimes it just slips off your mind. Thankfully, iPhone comes with an exclusive VPN feature called, “VPN On-Demand or On-Demand VPN.” This feature when enabled on your iPhone, automatically connects you to your VPN whenever it’s needed. So with this feature, you don’t need to turn ‘on’ the VPN over and over again every time you connect it to the internet. iOS will take care of it all along. To use this feature, all you need is a compatible VPN app installed in your iPhone and to your knowledge, there are plenty of free and paid VPN apps available on the App Store to bridge the gap.

Once you are done with that, you can enable this feature in these simple steps:

  • After installing a VPN app, go to settings.

  • Scroll down a bit and then go to General.

  • Just below the iTunes Sync option, you’ll see a VPN bar.

  • Tap on the VPN bar and it’ll show you the VPN app installed on your device.

  • The next thing you need is to tap on the small “i” button shown next to the name of your VPN app.

  • Doing that will show you the information pertaining to your VPN network including the Network Type, Server address and Account number.

  • Below that, you’ll see an option saying, “Connect On-Demand.” Tap on that and turn it on.

That’s all you have to do. As long as the on-demand feature is turned ‘on,’ you don’t have to worry about your data and sensitive information. Now every time you connect your phone to any WiFi network, it will automatically turn ‘on’ the VPN, so you don’t have to do that manually.

Not Seeing the “Connect On-Demand” Option?

It might occur to you that it doesn’t show the “Connect On-demand” option when you tap on the “i” button. To tell you the truth, this very well depends on the VPN app that you have installed on your device. Some VPN apps come with a built-in option to auto-connect when you go online. So the next thing you should do is to check your app first. Go to the app settings and see if there’s an Auto-connect feature in there. Turning ‘on’ that feature will do just the same.

On contrary to this, some VPN apps are configured to stay ‘on’ all the time and with that be the case, chances are there won’t be a similar option in the app settings either. One way to know if your VPN app has a built-in reconnect feature or not is to turn on the WiFi. If it supports auto-reconnect, then just as you turn the WiFi ‘on,’ the VPN will be activated and an icon will appear on the status bar at the top of the screen. If that doesn’t happen, it’s obvious that your app doesn’t support the feature either. In that case, all you can do is, ditch that VPN app and install a new one!
