What are the different modules of the services?

One of the most vital elements of IoT Core Service is the Device Update Center (DUC), which allows the manufacturer to customize and control updates and in addition to this, an outline of all the devices can be seen. All the updates are implemented using the same Content Delivery Network (CDN) as a Windows update.

While Windows 10 Core doesn't cost any penny, Microsoft expects that the device manufacturers will seek help from Windows maker in order to keep their machines up-to-date via IoT Core Services. Also, to claim 10 years of Windows 10 support, Microsoft will be charging some fees which will witness new OS releases every two to three years.

The fee payers will get to access the DUC and an added benefit of Device Health Attestation (DHA)- a service that evaluates the safety of devices and takes actions if it detects any issues. To help recommend solutions, it is additionally combined with Azure IoT Device Management for a smooth performance.

What is Microsoft’s new pricing model for Windows 10 IoT Core Services?

  • The solution integrators and businesses can buy IoT Core Services through an Azure Subscription. The price will be set at $0.30 per device per month whenever the product will release later this fall. However, during the preview period, the price has been kept at $0.15 per device per month.
  • By pre-paying for the IoT Core Services, the OEMs can license the services with a device. However, this option will only be available by the end of this year.
  • The partners registered for Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program will be able to establish existing relationships with the customers and resell their services accordingly. Also, to meet the device requirements, they can sell pay-as-you-go subscription as per the demands. This option will also be available in the later part of this year. ?

The margins of IoT devices are usually very thin and the vendors might have to recoil for using Windows 10 IoT Core Services at an additional cost. However, the Windows update framework on which these services thrive are efficiently tried and tested, therefore, the manufacturers might take some advantage of selling the subscriptions to their clients with improved support options. Microsoft is very much keen to provide the solutions and services for what is doubtlessly going to build an alluring market.
