Indie Games On App Store

The Indie gamers were having a pretty rough patch of time all these days when it comes to launching their games on the iOS App Store. It goes without saying that publishing illicit content on the App store can be quite precarious especially when you don’t have an authorised publisher’s account. That’s why many independent game developers were having a hard time publishing their games on the App Store. But not anymore. Lately, Apple has provided a safe haven to all the Indie Game Developers, giving them a permanent place on the App Store for publishing their content.

What Are These Indie Games?

For those who don’t know, an Indie Game is a game developed by independent developers or a group of individuals who don’t work for any private or government organization. These games are usually created without any financial support or help from the publishers. Consequently, these games rely on the digital distribution on the mobile platforms without any outside support.

To initial funding for these games is usually procured by running various  crowd-funding campaigns amid the development stage or seeking support from a publisher. Despite of the complexities involved in Indie Gaming, these games are getting more and more popular.

Celebrating Indie Games For The First Time

Over the last one week, Apple has been showcasing some of the most popular games on its App Store that are exclusively brought to you by the independent game developers. It’s apparently the first time in the last decade that Indie Games are actually given a run for their money. The independent developers often complain that the games developed by them don’t stand a chance at the iOS App Store. Not because they’re bad or anything like that. But because they get poor visibility on the App Store as compared to the biggies like EA, Activision, Sony and Gameloft.

But this two day Indie Game celebration campaign organized by Apple has definitely spread a tide of rejoice among the Indie Developers. Besides that, Apple also ran a 10 day promotional campaign to feature Indie Games which ends on March 20. And not to forget, Apple has dedicated a new section specially for the Indie Games on its App Store.

Why Indie Games Are So Outcast?

There are a number of reasons why these Indie Games don’t get a lot of visitors on App Store, the direct impact of which seems to be on their downloads and user base. First off, these games don’t usually get the kind of promotions they deserve. App Store Optimization is something that helps boost the visibility of your app or game on all the major mobile platforms. But in case your ASO isn’t that good, then chances are, your app or game will be drowned inside the massive pool of apps available on the App Store. Yes, there are millions of apps available on both android and iOS platforms and thus the competition is damn too high.

So definitely if your marketing strategy is not that good, your game or app definitely won’t stand a chance. Furthermore, Apple itself prefers the apps developed by leading development organizations, ranks them higher and lists them in top categories. But now that Apple has started promoting these Indie Games as well, things are expected to change. So let’s hope that things work out well for the Indie Developers.
