What is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is a tenacious virtual environment that assimilates a comprehensive range of online gaming, social media, videos, virtual reality, augmented reality, and others. The term incorporates evolution in the lap of the future of technology.

The words "meta" and "verse" are combined to form the word "metaverse". The word “meta” is a Greek origin prefix meaning “connected with a change of position” while the word “verse” is derived from “universe”.

The term “metaverse” was originally coined by the author Neil Stephenson in 1992 in his science fiction novel “Snow Crash”. In the book, he visualized life-like human avatars, digital interaction, and weaving virtual reality, including what impact does the metaverse has on the real world and he also emphasized how the brain is linked to the virtual world.

The metaverse, in essence, is a computer simulation in which individuals will be able to do everything they can in real life, depending on the advancement of the age.

Metaverse: A Proposed Internet Technology Expansion

  • Meta- The metaverse has become a prominent topic of discourse when Facebook was relaunched as Meta. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced its corporate restructuring as Meta Platforms Inc., on October 28, 2021. It will unite apps and technologies under a single new company brand. Meta's prime objective will be to bring the metaverse to life and assist people in connecting, finding communities, and growing businesses.

Zuckerberg believed that the metaverse will resemble a cross between today's online social encounters and those transported into the physical world. It will allow you to have an interactive experience with others even if you are not physically available with them, as well as to do things collectively that you would not be able to do in the actual world. It's the latest in a string of social technologies, and it marks the beginning of a new era for our organization. The end goal of social technology is to make you feel as if you are right there with another person or in another location.

  • Microsoft Mesh- Mesh is the name of the concept that Microsoft is attempting to create and one of its most intriguing characteristics is called “Holoportation”. Microsoft already employs holograms and is working on extended reality apps that merge the real world with virtual reality and augmented reality.

In 2022, Microsoft wants to integrate mixed reality including holograms and virtual avatars. It implies that its users will be able to project holographic versions of themselves and explore 3-D virtual spaces. HoloLens devices, a one-of-a-kind technology that can make 'Holoportation' a whole new experience, are the ideal way to enjoy its virtual and augmented realities. Mesh, on the other hand, maybe accessible by virtual reality headsets, mobile phones, tablets, and computers.

  • Roblox- Roblox is an international online game platform and game creation system that connects people through games and enables users to build their own games as well as play those developed by others. Roblox was released in 2006 but began to develop fast in the second half of the 2010s, and the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated its expansion. As a result of the stringent lockdown protocols, it was played by more than half of all American children in 2020. It's much more than simply a game.

The National Football League (NFL) has created a virtual store in the Roblox video game, trying to capitalise on growing consumer demand for digital things that can be utilised in the metaverse.

  • Fortnite- Fortnite, on the contrary, is a free multiplayer video game developed by Epic Games in 2017 where you and your friends may work together to build your own Fortnite world or compete to win. Fortnite has expanded into a larger social media realm, with prominent musicians such as Ariana Grande performing concerts on the app.

Some unfamiliar businesses have developed their own fantasy reality. An American tech company, Linden Lab launched Second Life, an online parallel universe in 2003. Second Life gives its users the opportunity to live a second life. On the platform, users can design their own digital avatars and they can plan events and organize business meetings to interact with virtual objects in the second life.

Metaverse Group, an NFT-based metaverse real estate corporation, has paid USD 2.43 million for a plot of land on Decentraland, a virtual real estate marketplace. This was the most money ever spent on virtual real estate.

VR vs AR: What’s the difference?

In Virtual reality (VR), users are engaged and immersed in a virtual environment that stimulates their senses of sight and hearing. Virtual reality makes use of a VR headset with speakers and a display that fills your complete field of vision.

On the contrary, Augmented reality (AR) enhances your real-world environment by incorporating virtual elements. It does not attempt to captivate the user and shut out the real world; instead, it simply overlays images and animation on top of existing environments. AR uses a number of mediums, including headgear, applications, and digital cameras.

The Rise of The Metaverse: What metaverse holds in the future?

The metaverse will, in fact, surpass the internet in terms of realism. We already have an embryonic version of the Metaverse with digital commodities in place today. With key players like Non Fungible token (NFT), Microsoft Mesh, and Facebook or meta entering and establishing the Metaverse as the new future, it will only be a question of time before other corporations follow suit, resulting in an unprecedented extension of the Metaverse's limits and the unleashing of massive amounts of wealth previously unknown to lenders and firms equally.
