Intel and Android Things

Besides its massive product lineup, Google has always been at the forefront when it comes to Internet of Things. Lately, Google has come with a brilliant IoT model called Android Things which is an embedded operating system based on Android. It is a slimmed down version of Android which provides turnkey solutions for various smart devices. For all one knows, Intel has partnered with Google for its Joule 570x Computer Board. So this marks the arrival of Android Things on Intel’s IoT platform. Clearly, it is going to bring a great deal of benefit to both the industry leaders as is being perceived as a mega venture.

With the Android Things support, Intel aims to deliver avant-garde IoT hardware products and electronic gadgets household usage and industrial use cases. The Intel’s Joule board development kit provides high-end computing capabilities to various projects. The Intel Jould module typically comes in two configurations, Joule 550x and Joule 570x. Out of these two, Joule 570x happens to be the high-speed, high-performance which boasts a powerful 1.7 GHz quad core processor and 4GB LPDDR4 RAM. And with Android Things support, Intel plans to take it to the next level.

Key Features of Joule 570x Module

Intel’s Joule 570x is a powerful computing board and a comprehensive software suite which provides requisite tools to the developers for creating smart hardware devices. Joule 570x is a perfect blend of innovation and technology and it also adds some impeccable features to the devices such 4K UHD graphics, high processing power, 3D modelling and object recognition capabilities.

It comes with a 64-bit, 1.7 GHz quad core processor powered by Intel Atom T5700 and 4GB LPDDR4 RAM. Besides, it comes with a built-in support for 802.11ac WiFi with MIMO as well as a Bluetooth 4.1 support. Another stand-out feature of 570x is the Realsense 3D camera used for object recognition and distance measurements. Last but not the least, it is powered by a linux based OS which is specifically tailored for IoT and other smart hardware devices.

Joule 570x vs Raspberry Pi 3.0

With this new venture, Intel lands itself among the first few companies to support Google’s Android Things. As a matter of fact, there are only three boards at the time that support Android Things. The other two being Raspberry Pi 3.0 and NXP’s Pico i.MX6UL. But the main competition is between Intel and RPi 3.

Comparing the two, Intel’s Joule 570x is supposed to be better both in terms of features and specifications. RPi 3.0  comes with a 1.2 GHz ARM cortex A53 quad core processor while 570x boasts a more powerful 1.7 GHz intel processor.

Also when it comes to RAM, Joule 570x clearly supersedes the RPi 3.0. Talking precisely, RPi 3 offers only 1GB LPDDR2-900 SD RAM. On contrary to this, Joule 570x boasts a 4GB LPDDR4 RAM.

This and many other features of Joule 570x clearly make it stand off the charts. And now with Google’s Android Things support by its side, it is more or less obvious that some new ventures from Intel are about to emerge.
