Big data is not restrictive to volume

Big Data as per the Wikipedia is defined as "Big data is a set of techniques and technologies that require new forms of integration to uncover large hidden values from large datasets that are diverse, complex, and of a massive scale”. Well, In layman we can say that big data manage a large amount of data coming from various sources like internet, society, nature, sensors etc. Big data is the ability to derive the useful actionable information out of voluminous amount of data (structured, unstructured and semi-structure).
Big data is implication and analyse of large information and is completely transforming the way businesses are done.
Characteristics of Big Data
Big data is not just about the volume but it talks equivalently about velocity(speed) and variety.
-
Multi region data distribution
-
Relax Consistency requirement
-
Relax scheme requirements
-
Optimize data to suit actual needs
-
No single point failure
-
Very fast and reliable response
4 V’s : Volume, Variety, Velocity, Veracity
Volume:
The data volume is on peak as the data is now more than the text data. The data are now more in format of images, videos, music on our social media channels. For such a large amount of data, the storage system of Terabytes and Petabytes is very common. As now we talk about Zettabytes or Brontobytes. It’s very important to re-evaluate the application and architecture built to support large databases. Hence, Volume refers to vast amount of data generated every second. The big volume represents Big Data.
Velocity:
There was a time when yesterday’s information used to be considered as fresh but now with the evolvement of internet, news channel and radio, newspaper content are becoming outdated. Velocity refers to the speed at which fresh data is generated and the speed at which new data moves around. The technology, data growth and the exploded social media have changed how we look at the data. Social media messages are going viral within fraction of seconds while technology allows us to analyse the content while it’s being generated without ever putting it into databases. The movement of data/content/information is now almost real time and updates has reduced to few fractions of the second. The high velocity data represents the big data.
Variety:
We used to deal with all structured data that can be stored in tables, relational databases but from last few years, there is more focus on unstructured data which can be in form of video, photos. It is the need of the organisation to arrange it and make the information meaningful. Big Data technology binds and analyse different types/formats of data such as video recording, text, video, music, photos. Variety refers to different types of data from various sources. Variety of the data represents Big Data.
Veracity:
Veracity refers to uncertainty, messiness and trustworthiness of the data. It was nearly impossible to control such large varied data with quality and accuracy but Big Data technology allows us to work with us such (like twitter, typos, abbreviations,...) type of data
