Apple Partners With GE On Industrial IoT Applications

The leading tech giants, Apple and GE have partnered on a new software venture for Apple’s mobile operating system called iOS. Lately, Apple has announced a new software development kit for iOS that will allow the developers to create IoT applications for Predix which happens to be an Internet of Things platform launched by GE. Apple’s partnership with GE will bring the industrial applications of Predix to the iPhone and iPad.

What Is Predix?

Now the question that may pop up in your mind is, “what is Predix and how it works?” For those who don’t know, Predix is a software platform that gathers data from industrial machines, analyses this data and processes it on Cloud server. It’s a cloud based Platform as a Service (PaaS) that provides a standard way to connect machines, data and computer devices through Operations Optimization and Asset Performance Management (APM). In this way, it paves way for industrial-scale analytics. Predix is built on top of Cloud Foundry, an open-source, multi-cloud PaaS developed and maintained by Cloud Foundry foundation and provides a microservices delivery model with a distributed architecture.

Apple and The Predix SDK

Apple is soon going to launch the Predix SDKs for iPhones and iPads. The SDKs for iOS are expected to arrive on Thursday i.e October 26. These SDKs will enable the developers to create powerful, native apps to leverage the industrial analytics features of the Predix platform on iOS supported mobile devices.

These apps will further provide valuable insights to the industrial operators about the performance of their equipment. This information can be obtained on iPhone and iPad using the Predix supported iOS apps. If there’s some potential issue with the equipment that cause problems in the future, the app will the user in advance so that necessary steps can be taken to crackdown such issues.

The use of industrial apps will also close the information loop faster thereby reducing downtime and increasing cost savings.
