Network Topology

Topology is a geometrical representation of how all the components are interconnected to each other in the network. It structures the relationship of all the links and linking devices (usually called nodes) to one another. Nodes can be switches or routers. Choosing the appropriate topology helps in the increase of performance as it increases the data transfer rates and energy efficiency. Topologies can be categorized as:


Physical Topology – It is the physical layout of nodes and connections. Physical topologies include the following:
 

  • Point-to-point Topology - The simplest topology with a dedicated link between two endpoints. The easiest to understand, of the variations of point-to-point topology, is a point-to-point communication channel that appears, to the user. A child's telephone is one example of a physical dedicated channel.
  • Bus Topology – Here, every node is connected in series along a single cable. For example, broadband.
  • Star Topology – In this topology, each device is connected to all other nodes through a central hub. Wired home and office networks mostly use a physical star topology for transmission.
  • Ring Topology- Each device has a dedicated point-to-point configuration to neighbors. Signals are passed from device to device until it reaches the destination. The signal is passed in one direction only. Any break in the ring disables the entire network.
  • Mesh Topology- In this topology, each device is directly connected to all other nodes through wires. If one link becomes unusable, it does not weaken the entire system. Thus it is robust in nature.
  • Tree Topology- In this topology, many connected devices are arranged like the branches of a tree (hierarchical form). For example, it is used to organize the computers in a corporate network or the information in the database.
  • Hybrid Topology - Hybrid Topology uses two or more differing network topologies. It can include a mix of bus topology, mesh topology, star topology, ring topology, and tree topology.
