Over The Top Streaming Video Content

Over the top streaming content

OTT (Over-the-top)
is the delivery of media - video, audio, and all other media over the Internet independent of a cable, satellite or over any TV provider.

Unlike IPTV, the delivery of services usually the video content is through open internet rather than any Internet Service Provider (ISP). Without making use of any infrastructure, the content is delivered straight from the provider to the consumer. It can be a chance that the provider is aware of the content of the IP Packet but, for sure, the provider is not responsible for nor able to control - the viewing abilities, copyrights or any of the nature of the internet.

OTT video service continues its rapid rate of change impacting the video ecosystem. Viewers doesn’t care about the manufacturer of the device just that they want everything to work everywhere. It’s annoying if something don’t work on a particular device despite of the fact that video works well on other device. We must agree that users now look for a seamless OTT viewing experience as they move in the entire world across multi devices. OTT has set a standard in which devices find each other ‘magically’. User can view the video or listen music across wide range of devices globally without any interruption and delay. They achieve seamless viewing experience.

The content over OTT is in process of introducing new, fresh model of consuming content. And it has also democratized the TV landscape. Now, viewers will only pay for the content they wish to watch rather than all channels.

Many devices today can be connected to both your big screen and the Internet. They break-down into three categories:

•  Smart TVs from vendors like Samsung,  Sony, and LG. Many TVs sold today are capable of connecting to the web, although surveys found that half of them are not connected.

•  Media boxes like AppleTV and Roku - Their primary purpose is streaming of internet video, so they are de?nitely plugged in.

•  Xbox and Playstation like game consoles  - Though games are their primary purpose, their Web TV capabilities are widely used.

Components of an OTT enabled device:

  • Signalling and broadcasting service integration

  • Presentation and navigation

  • Security / DRM

  • Metadata

  • Audience measurement

  • Application runtime and management
