Google Adds AR Support To Its Motion App On Android

The Motion Stills app from Google is getting an AR makeover with the forthcoming update. The app lets you create videos and gifs of the moving stills that you can record through your phone’s camera. Along with the AR support, Google is adding AR stickers to the app for making it a fun way to create videos and gifs on your Android smartphones. The AR feature is initially available exclusively on Pixel 2 and few other Android devices. The support for other devices will be added soon.

The app will now give you access to some pretty cool augmented reality features like surface tracking. It also lets you pin 3D AR models ranging from poly shaped chickens, robots, dinosaurs and more. The users can record videos and gifs inside the app with the AR stickers placed on screen. The use of these stickers makes it look like these objects are placed right in front of the camera. The feature is quite similar to the one in Snapchat that lets you use AR powered bitmojis to record 10 second video clips and publish them as your snaps.

How It Works?

The AR mode in Motion Stills app is fueled by instant motion tracking. It’s a freedom tracking system derived from the technology behind the Motion Text that we see in the iOS counterpart of the app. The same technology is also used in the privacy blur feature on YouTube for tracking static and moving objects.

In Motion Stills android app, the same technology has been used with several refinements and enhancements. With all such refinements and advancements, the technology enables powerful AR experiences to the users. The primary requirement for accessing this feature is an Android device with a Gyroscope.

These AR stickers have been made available on Pixel 2 devices in December last year. The stickers were released in association with the latest Star Wars movie.
