New Apple Maps Feature Lets You Search Places While Navigating

Posted By : Anirudh Bhardwaj | 08-Nov-2016

Although the Apple Maps application is not as popular as Google Maps, it is incessantly striving to make its effect felt throughout the domain. Over the years, there have been several significant changes and improvements in the app, augmenting its accuracy and making it more advanced. Amidst all these refinements going on, another major update arrives for Apple Maps adding a new feature called “Quick Controls.” This new feature allows you to search places while navigating through the app toward the destination. You can easily look for places such as hotels, bars, restaurants, gas stations and other points of interest. Quick Controls in Apple Maps also let you add quick stops on your way toward the destination. Not only that, it’ll also give you a rough estimate of how much time it might take and how it’ll impact your journey.

Using Quick Controls In Apple Maps

When you switch to the Search Bar on Apple Maps, it shows various categories of the places that you might be interested in right below the search bar. You can choose from the list of all the nearby places lying on the route.

You can use the “Quick Controls” feature in Apple Maps by following these simple steps.

  • Launch the Apple Maps application and type in the destination.

  • Choose Directions, select your desired route and start navigation.

  • Swipe up on the menu bar and choose your stop from the categories to add a detour.

Once you’re done with that, the app will guide you through all the stops that you’ve added toward your final destination.

Note: From the categories, you can choose your point of interest and make a detour. For instance, you can find all the nearby restaurants, cafes and hotels under the Food tab. In the same way, you can find shopping malls under the shopping tab and hospitals under the health tab.

The Siri Way

Plus, you can also give voice commands to Siri to make a detour for you. Siri makes it extremely easy to make a detour especially in case you are driving. That way, you won’t have to manually do anything. Just ask Siri to find nearby restaurants, hotels, bars or gas stations and it’ll bring you the list of all the nearby places from that category. Adding those places will also show you the estimated time based on the detour. You can add as many places as you want while navigating through the maps all at once.

The “Quick Controls” feature in Apple Maps comes with the latest incremental update of iOS 10 and it works for iOS 10, iOS 10.1 and 10.2. So in case you are still using iOS 8 or iOS 9, you should immediately upgrade to the latest version to enjoy these benefits.
